Oregon's Willing To Spend

Yessir.  This hot new "stimulus package" includes $12 billion for mess transit, and Portland's a-slavering like a Mayor with a hot teenager.  It may not be all it's cracked up to be, as one of Oregon's most honest Congress-critters mentioned:

"I'm not going to lie to you and tell you every dollar will be perfectly spent," Rep. David Wu, D-Ore., confessed only hours before voting for the bill Wednesday.

Well, at least they have standards - there are just some things that even an Oregon politician won't lie about.

Interestingly, Obama's "stimulus package" includes around $30 billion in highway projects - most of which can't be done unless EPA restrictions are eliminated.

Not that it matters much to Oregonians - we don't do "highway projects" here, anyway.  Our politicians believe in creating congestion.  And the term "stimulus package" just gets Portland's Mayor fantasizing, which doesn't do much for anyone other than his laundry service.

You may be aware that PETA's latest groove involves trying to get everybody to think of fish as "sea kittens".  They get goofier every year.  Somebody took a moment to modify their database for them, though.

About That "Urban Renewal" Thing

LUBA gave Portland a smackdown yesterday, noting that the City hadn't justified is $325 million expansion plan.  Much of the proposed extension area isn't exactly "blighted", and they also took exception to Portland's plan to transfer funding to a "satellite" district several miles away in the outer Southeast area.

It's a small step, to be sure - but at least it's in the right direction.

The Evolution Of Bush Derangement Syndrome

The left absolutely hated George W. Bush.  Their contempt for him was so profound and palpable that it was even given a name by psychiatrist Charles Krauthammer: Bush Derangement Syndrome.  Now, most of the millions of leftists who despised the ex-president absolutely wanted him to fail; in fact, while they're loath to admit it, they felt this way even when his success was synonymous with our nation's (this even included the failure of the Iraq war).  And "felt" is the operative word; they were governed by emotion and hated the man with a burning passion.  

But Bush is out of office and back home in Texas.  This leaves a huge void; Leftists simply cannot exist without somebody to hate.  Isn't it interesting how they've evolved from flower children (think Jefferson Airplane: "Somebody To Love") into something so toxic?

Suddenly, along comes a guy who very honestly notes that many of the new President's policies and perspectives are wrong for America.  They might fly in Kenya, but the guy's President of the USA.  Given these facts, it's logical to hope that he fails.

Bam!  A hate-magnet for the Left has emerged.  Rush Limbaugh has in recent days been referred to as a corpulent drug addict who is the real leader of the GOP, and even Bam himself has been uncharacteristically uncool where Limbaugh is concerned.

This looks like a Leftist hate-pattern with some real staying power.

Change As Expected

Obama has, as promised, extended an offer to talk with Iran.  And as expected, Iran's resident nutball launched a fresh tirade against the United States, demanding an apology for its "crimes" against Iran and saying he expected "deep and fundamental" change from Obama.

Yeah, if there's one thing Iran knows all about, it's fundamentalism.  Don't look for hope'n'change anytime soon on that front.  According to them, Obama's offer demonstrates U.S. failure.

I think it was Gallagher who first noted that you can't circumcize an Iranian because there's just no end to them pricks.

Reflecting Tough Economic Times, Fed Sheds Jobs

Just kidding.  They're expanding, of course.

Even Arnie, down in California, is ordering that state employees be furloughed 2 days a month.  Caterpillar's slashing jobs.  So's Micro$oft.  The feds?

WASHINGTON — Companies are cutting jobs by the tens of thousands. State and local governments are penny-pinching, too. So what about Uncle Sam? Tough times for him as well?

Not exactly.

In fact the number of federal workers is on the rise.

That might seem strange to the 11 million people in the U.S. who are out of work — and the millions more who fear they soon will be. Shouldn’t Washington pare down too?

But it is unlikely that President Barack Obama will put any of the nearly 2 million federal civil servants out in the street in the middle of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. His proposed $800-plus billion economic aid plan, which includes heavy spending on public works, is expected to increase the ranks of federal workers, although mostly at the state and local level.

Obama is calling American workers to public service and has said he wants to ‘make government cool again.’

Some view federal jobs as a great stabilizer, and so an increase is good news.  It is good news, if the goal is to increase the size of government and to bring ever more features of private enterprise under governmental control.  If there is one unassailable truism in this world, it is this: governments expand.

Sam Just Can't Stay Out Of The News

He's getting almost as much play around here as Obama.  Every day, it seems, brings a new tidbit.

It turns out that Portland's latest pedophilic Mayor was, in fact, boinking a kid who was 17.  Isn't that sweet?  Maybe Sam, like his fellow Democrat Neil, can go on to become Governor.  Maybe not.  Neil was a master of the cover-up; Sam's clearly not in his league.

Anyone remember Bob Packwood, who was drummed out of the US Senate for the crime of tossing back a few glasses of boxed wine and chasing women around his desk?  How very 1950's.

Oh...right...he was a Republican.  Democrats can get a pass on much worse behavior because, after all, They Care.

But the Mayor's story just keeps rolling on:

Now 22, Sam's teenaged paramour has been offered a cover and nude spread in a hot gay magazine.  No word on whether he'll go for it, as yet.  And Portland's favorite fireman, Randy Leonard, having apparently boarded over the secret door that used to connect his and Adams' offices, has gone public with his distrust of the honorable Mayor. 

"After a while, you ask someone about something enough and they keep lying about it enough, you quit asking because you know you're not going to be told the truth," Leonard said. "If anything, you're going to be told more lies so you stop asking. You just assume there's more stuff out there based on the constant lies."

This is an especially stinging rebuke for Hizzonner; Leonard may wield only one vote on the Portland City Council, but until this whole thing with Adams' predatory hound-dogging of a kid erupted, Randy was one of Sam's strongest supporters.  Sam may be able to rely upon pups like Amanda Fritz for now, but he should bear in mind that Fritz, being new to the Council, is likely to put up with pretty much anything for the time being.  That may change as she gains familiarity with the office.
