However, one of the main functions of government is to ensure public safety. Maybe they should figure out how to get that right before they take on more functions.

The beauty of free health care is that we will be creating a layer of structural taxation that will expand over the years, overwhelming our ability to pay.
This is not like the social security problem that can be solved by simply increasing the retirement age.
The only way to control costs will be through the allocation of medical resources. And government is not an efficient agent to achieve rational allocation.
