A University of Illinois perfesser has received a $3.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation in order to pursue a cure for cancer means of altering the sexes of papaya plants. No, this isn't a put-on; your money is really going to fund this critically important endeavor. Apparently, the recession hasn't significantly impacted the halls of academia (or is that macademia?). Either way, it's nuts.
