Long a mecca for urban hipsters - which is how what pass for leaders in Portland have long envisioned as something to emulate -Brooklyn, New York is experiencing a hot new trend: hipsters are leaving for the suburbs; The New York Times describes the phenomenon as "hipsturbia".
Patrick McNeil, 37, a painter from Greenpoint, encountered nothing but frustration on a recent Brooklyn house hunt.
He and his wife instead bought a house in suburban Hastings. And it was only a 40-minute drive to his Brooklyn studio. Area realtors speak now of a "mass exodus from Brooklyn".
As Portland continues to strive to attract "creative class" hipsters, they'd do well to take a lesson from places that have been there and done that already.
