Yesterday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, a flight information sign fell off a wall in the airport terminal, landing atop a Kansas woman and her four children. She's in critical condition, with severe damage to her legs; one child is dead. The sign, weighing some 400 pounds, was apparently affixed to the wall with "liquid nails", although code requires them to be tethered by a steel cable attached to a structural member of the building.
Reacting swiftly to the tragedy:
This morning Terri Sewell (D-AL) has proposed installing airbags on all suspended signs in airports.
Meanwhile, the FAA is closing four air traffic control towers in Oregon because - all together now - Sequester.
