Or soon will be - domestic oil production, already the highest it's been in 25 years, is increasing to such an extent that the USA is on trak to be the world's largest producer by 2015. Interestingly, despite all of Obama's barking about the importance of energy independence, none of the new production is coming from federal lands; energy independence means, to him, "investing" billions of dollars into wind and solar companies. We've seen how well that works out.
The production levels should be causing the warmists to flip out, but we've not been hearing much from them on that front. The bitterly cold climate must be keeping them at home. Before it got so cold, they were expressing great concern over the effects of global warming on Antarctica, particularly on the West Antarctic ice sheet, where large chunks have been calving off. This was occurring, so they claimed because man-made global warming (although record amounts of buildup have been occurring elsewhere on the continent).
Well, not so fast there, Spanky:
Researchers have discovered a chain of smoldering active volcanoes under the West Antarctic ice sheet.
They're under a mile-thick layer of ice, so they're not going to pop up any time soon, but the transmitted heat explains the increased glacial calving rate there; the meltwater acts as a lubricant.
"Eruptions at this site are unlikely to penetrate the 1.2-2-kilometer-thick overlying ice, but would generate large volumes of melt water that could significantly affect ice stream flow," said the study.
