The agency yesterday announced that it is not going to pay the $1.2 billion in claims filed against it after their actions triggered a catastrophic spill of mine wastes that polluted rivers in multiple states.
Attorneys for the EPA and the Justice Department concluded the EPA is barred from paying the claims because of sovereign immunity, which prohibits most lawsuits against the government.
So they can come after you, but when they cause massive damages, they're immune. They can write regulations that jack up your energy costs, and you can't do anything about it. And when they screw up big-time, they get a walk-away free card.
"When the law allows the government to hide from those whom it has harmed, the law must change," Colorado Republican Sen. Cory Gardner said.
No kidding, Cory. As has been noted here many times, Nixon created EPA with the best of intentions, but under idiots like Gina McCarthy, it has become a power-hungry behemoth. Time to rein it in. At this point, the agency simply functions as a revolving door between Sierra Club and similar groups, and federal employees.
