Logan Kitzhaber, the son of former Oregon governor Retread, was sentenced yesterday to an entire week in jail after pleading guilty to assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants. The charges stemmed from a wreck he caused on highway 101 on the outskirts of the central coast town of Lincoln City last July 4th.
18 years old at the time, he conceded that he'd smoked dope the night before and drinking "a beer" just before driving on the day of the wreck, which was confirmed through toxicology tests. The legal age for possession of either of those intoxicants is 21. It was determined that his Prius crossed the solid yellow center line and sideswiped a recreational vehicle, which flipped onto its side. The occupants of that vehicle, a couple in their 60s from Port Angeles, Washington, were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The kid was airlifted to a Portland trauma center, apparently with a head injury - which, judging from the remains of his Prius, seems unsurprising. However, he was released the next day, so it obviously wasn't a serious wound.
In addition to the whole week of jail, he was sentenced to five years of probation. But at least one imagines that his auto insurance rates will be prohibitive.
Justice, the Oregon way.
