About half of Canadians want to see a crackdown on illegal immigration across their southern border. You read that right:
Nearly half of Canadians want to deport people who are illegally crossing into Canada from the United States, and a similar number disapprove of how Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is handling the influx, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Monday. Canadians appeared to be just as concerned about illegal immigration as their American neighbors, according to the poll, which was conducted between March 8-9. Some 48 percent of Canadians said they supported “increasing the deportation of people living in Canada illegally.”
When asked specifically about the recent border crossings from the United States, the same number - 48 percent - said Canada should "send these migrants back to the U.S."
It seems that there are a whole lot of folks walking across the border from Vermont into Quebec, and a lot of Canadians are none too happy about it. They're also walking from North Dakota into Manitoba.
"There are so many people in the world who want to come in and go through the right channels," said Greg Janzen, elected leader of a Manitoba border municipality that has seen hundreds of border crossers. "That's what's pissing most people off. These guys are jumping the border," he said.
Does that sound familiar, or what?
"Refugees are much more welcomed when we have gone and selected them ourselves as a country, as opposed to refugees who have chosen us," said Janet Dench, executive director of Canadian Council for Refugees.
The Canadian government has capped legal immigration into the country at 300,000 for 2017; by contrast, the USA last year accepted over 1.2 million legal immigrants, although the five-year running average is 1,136,000. Since the election of Trump, hundreds of folks from Africa and the Middle East have been bee-lining for the northern US border; it's unclear why they aren't making a similar run to the Mexican border. Maybe they don't like Mexicans.
But the usually unfailingly polite Canadians are increasingly perturbed by the influx of illegal aliens who are self-deporting from the USA. The self-deporters actually began doing that last year; it's intensified since the election.
Speaking of our hard-working illegal aliens, however:
Authorities raided a building in southwest Detroit on Saturday as part of an investigation into cockfighting and illegal gambling.
There were 86 people inside the abandoned building in the 1200 block of Green, near Springwells and I-75, when multiple agencies executed a search warrant around 1 p.m, said Khaalid Walls, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“We made approximately 50 administrative arrests for individuals who were in violation of immigration law,” he said. “And those individuals will be detained in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.”
Guess Detroit's not a "sanctuary city". Good.
