A recent addition to the file entitled Law Of Unintended Consequences: Birders were having a field day at Montrose Beach in the Chicago area; they flocked to see a species rarely spotted in the midwest - a burrowing owl. Large numbers of avid birders showed up at the site and repeatedly flushed the bird into the air for better viewing. Unsurprisingly, the final flush ended in a display of speed, blood, and general carnage as the small owl was picked off by a passing Cooper's hawk. Birders now "...wonder if they contributed to the owl's death".
