The folks at Lawrence Livermore Lab have built a so-called "super laser" capable of generating temperatures and pressures previously associated only with the cores of stars. Never before achieved on the planet, a fusion reaction triggered by the super laser hitting hydrogen atoms will produce more energy than was required to prompt "ignition," according to NIF director Edward Moses.
