Cover of The Godfather (Widescreen Edition)
The Godfather of pizza seems to be picking up support, and certainly, there's much to like. He's a straight-talker, a successful businessman, and brings an impressive background: he is a former deputy chairman (1992–94) and chairman (1995–96) of the civilian board of directors to the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Before his business and economics career he worked as a mathematician in ballistics for the United States Navy.
He is, in other words, everything that Barry isn't. He has real-world experience, and he doesn't rely upon teleprompters nor index cards - though they probably wouldn't hurt: When he formally launched his campaign on May 21, he proclaimed, “We need to reread the Constitution,” referring to “a little section in there that talks about ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.' ” Oops. Wrong founding document.
On the other hand, he hasn't claimed to have visited all "57 states", so he has that going for him.
The question isn't whether or not he can beat Barry, but whether or not he's ready. One thing that can be said with certainty: Barry's been in office for a while, now - and he's still not ready.
