A lot of folks are getting - as Barky has phrased it in the past - "all wee-weed up" over the publication by an obscure New York web 'zine of names and addresses of gun permit holders around the lower Hudson area. Some "outraged" folks have been striking back by publishing names and addresses and other contact data for darned near everyone who's ever had anything to do with the New York 'zine, but it seems really overblown.
Basically, they simply performed a public service by letting any would-be burglars or rapists in the area know in advance that certain addresses are best avoided if they wish to carry out their avocations without the incovenience and discomfort associated with being suddenly ventilated. Where's the problem, here? Certainly, I know that I'd prefer not to have to deal with some meth-head; blood isn't easy to remove from carpets, furniture, and walls, for one thing - though at least you have the option of spending some time and money to repaint the walls. And of course, there are the inevitable questions, which can take hours to get through, while all that time folks are dusting for fingerprints and tromping around and whatnot (hey, that dust is a real pain to clean up, too - don't let the cop shows fool you on that score). On top of the various gendarmes, you may get really lucky and have to deal with insurance people, as well. With luck, you'll have an understanding agent and all, but still.... It can take days to get the house back in order.
Less bother, less muss and fuss - seems like a win all 'round.
