The greenies, driving smugly around in their electric cars while always plugged into social media via their iPhones and demanding that "evil coal" power plants be banned because they're killing the planet may want to take a deep breath, step back, and maybe look into a mirror. As has been discussed here previously, it's more "environmentally-friendly" to buy and run two Hummers than it is to buy and run one Prius. But now the hipsters have something in their pockets that hits home even harder:
The average iPhone uses more energy than a midsize refrigerator, says a new paper by Mark Mills, CEO of Digital Power Group, a tech investment advisory. A midsize refrigerator that qualifies for the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star rating uses about 322 kW-h a year, while your iPhone uses about 361 kW-h if you stack up wireless connections, data usage, and battery charging.
Heh. It now takes more energy to stream a movie than to burn and ship a dvd. And it's only going to get worse. It won't be long before the hipsters are calling on Congress to rein in the EPA because, what with the scrubbers and other tech used on coal plants, they're really not so bad - at least, not if the alternative is reduced bandwidth. Golly, what to do? Tweet constantly, update FB all the time...or give it all up because they can't stand coal plants? In their self-centered little minds, the choice seems obvious.
