He passed yesterday at age 74. He'd apparently been battling prostate cancer, though media have not been reporting on cause of death. UPDATE: confirmed.

He also ran as a Republican for the governorship, but lost in part because the religious right hated him. He was a very bright man, serving three years as dean of the UO law school before serving for years as president of the UO. He might have been governor, if only he'd had a D next to his name on the ballot.
