The company ran fiber down through our neighborhood a year or so ago, and they really want us to rent their "1G high-speed" service. A guy came to the door to sell it, talking up how great it is, and...well, it didn't turn out like he'd hoped. He had great prices, considering the kind of speed promised for internet, but then I had a few questions:
Cool! So you run fiber all the way into the house?
Um, no, we run it to the telephone box outside your house.
Uh-huh. So it runs into POTS (plain old telephone system) wiring, which is copper, right?
Well, yes, I suppose so.
What happens when your 1G data hits a POTS interface?
Um...I really can't say.
Well I can - it slams into a brick wall, because POTS can't handle more than around 33.6k. So you want me to pay for your fiber, but you won't run it into the house?
He left.
That's why, much as I may dislike cable companies - they actually run the cable all the way into the house, so you can actually achieve data speeds close to what is advertised.
