Changes in the tax law mean that you won't be able to write off the value of donations and/or cash that you used to be able to deduct. This is going to impact not only your tax situation, but the bottom line for a large number of charities and other NPOs.
I used to keep records of donations, even though in the great scheme of things, ours have never been of massive significance. Still, even small deductions were sometimes useful in slightly lowering the tax bite. One thing I really dislike about Republicans is that when they're allowed to change the tax code, it's never in your favor.
Until Oregon's Bob Packwood got involved back in the 80s, there were all kinds of taxes you could deduct on your federal return: fuel taxes, excise taxes, hotel taxes, and many more. Those all went away, thanks to his "leadership on tax simplification". The idiot actually ran for reelection with a campaign in which he claimed that he had "put more money in your jeans". It didn't work; people aren't really as stupid as he thought. So he lost, and was replaced with a Democratic - Ron Wyden (D-NY). Ron maintains a small apartment in Portland so that he can continue to campaign as a Senator from Oregon, although he actually lives in NYC and D.C.
Politicians....
Ron at least understands that people here really are as stupid as he thinks.
